This is a special, rnodern big band tribute to the greatest jazz musician of all time Louis Armstrong, Most of the (very hip) arrangements are by bandleader Jim McNeely, plus a couple of the other band members. One tune is arranged by Harry Connick, Jr. The 62 minutes of music here is recorded live in concert in Denmark in early 2001, and allows plenty of blowing room for New Orleans native trumpet star (and guest soloist) Leroy Jones, plus others from the highly talented and professional Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra. Featured here is one of the best big bands in Europe. Chief conductor Jim McNeely, highly respected in the world of big band jazz, says about the Danish Radio Jazz Orch “It’s a great band, It is strong in every section and has some excellent solists. It is a real pleasure to write for such an experienced ensemble which interprets arrangements so sensitively, so impeccably.” This CD succeeds in accomplishing the difficult feat. of interpreting Louis Armstrong’s wonderful music in a modern big band context, in a way which will delight both traditional and modern jazz lovers
