After Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie the most influential of the new bebop players was trumpeter Howard McGhee. He had an infallible technique and a considerable knowledge of harmony. He appeared on dozens of bebop record dates and won the trumpet section of the ‘Down Beat’ poll in 1949 yet he has all too frequently been passed over in an assessment of post war jazz. It is thanks to the producer of these sessions that we have these latter-day recordings by one of the most important trumpet players to emerge in the Forties. Also, Howard McGhee can be heard on STCD 8266 “Jazzbrothers” and STCD 8272 “Wise In Time.”
Howard McGhee, Benny Bailey (trumpet); Sonny Redd (tenor sax); Barry Harris (piano); Lisle Atkinson (bass); Bobby Durham (drums).
