Paul Gonsalves and Eddie Davis probably had more similarities than differences musically. They were without doubt among the leading performers of their generation in the swinging tradition now thought of as mainstream. They were both equally aware of the contributions of Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young and they both had an affinity for the work of Ben Webster, despite each developing a wholly individual tone that could be mistaken for no one else.
