The members of the Al Grey-Jimmy Forrest Quintet are all disciples of the Basie school in that their music reflects the essential principle of the Basie credo. Forthright and unpretentious, it evokes the jubilant aspect of the blues tradition, a stomping, strutting affirmation of life that is the bedrock of all swinging jazz, Trombonist Grey is a veteran big band player who prior to Basie in 1957, had worked for such prestigious leaders as Benny Carter, Jimmie Lunceford, Lionel Hampton and Dizzy Gillespie.
