Musically the Third Herd (particularly in the early days) was a modification of the Second. The well-established Four Brothers sound of the saxophones was retained and as always the band was strong in brass and rhythm but the active book was less “way out” than the one offered by the earlier edition. This can easily be gathered by listening to the music played at the Hollywood Palladium during the long engagement there in the late spring of 1951 and presented on this CD.
Woody Herman (clarinet, altosax, vocal); Don Fagerquist, Doug Meltoma, Roy Caton, Shorty Rogers (trumpet); Herb Randel, Urbie Green, Jerry Dorn (trombone); Phil Urso, Jack Dulong, Kenny Pinson (tenorsax); Sam Staff (barytonesax); Dave McKenna (piano); Red Wooten (bass); Sonny Igoe (drums); Al Cohn, Ralph Burns, Neal Hefti, Jimmy Giuffre, Murray Gurlanek (arrangers).
