SWEETS & LOCKJAW/IN COPENHAGEN «««Jazzwise UK – ««««Politiken DK “I’d Rather be a mediocre originate than a perfect imitator any time” Sweets once said and Lockjaw added “I deliberately handle the horn the way I do, to show I’m its master”. The two men who had so much in common in music were true originals and proved to be firm favorites with audiences everywhere. This CD is the result from a most happy session which took place during the Summer of 1976. These are from rare live concerts made by famous americans musicians visiting Denmark. Jean-Michel Reisser, Lausanne, Switzerland Johnny Griffin/Eddie « Lockjaw » Davis This legendary duo of tenors has been got together for the last time when this album has been recorded. It’s was like that they never stopped to play and travel together. They were still at their best. This meeting is a very exciting one. They are very close but at the same time very different. They go so well playing together, with complicity, with savagesty and tenderly at the same time ! What we can hear here too is their mutual complicity and their great musicality between two same intruments but different persons. It’s a real lesson of every thing about saxes for the youngsters who play tenor. Wonderful concert ! Audio Samples soon!
