Swingin’ Stuff
The music on this CD (13 tunes, 72 min.) is taken from two live sessions recorded in Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen in March, 1965. The repertoire includes 4 Stuff Smith original compositions and several by Duke Ellington, among others. Stuff Smith is accompanied by the hottest and best rhythm section in Denmark (and maybe all of Europe): Kenny Drew on piano, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen on bass and Alex Riel on drums. Four of the tracks on this CD have never been released on LP or CD before. This is one of the most “live” live jazz albums ever recorded! Stuff Smith swings like mad, combining humor, showmanship and violin virtuosity of the highest order. To give an idea of the enthusiastic atmosphere at the time of these recordings, an eyewitness reports that by the last set everyone was standing on the tables! Review ALL ABOUT JAZZ
