Those who have already come across the music of Simon Spang-Hanssen, know his themes by heart. You don't forget a theme by Simon Spang-Hanssen. This forty-two year old Dane acknowledges Dexter Gordon, Ornette Coleman and John Tchicai as influences, but combined with his appreciation of non-European modes and metrics he has created a unique musical space for himself. A space in which he says he is "moving towards simplicity". The quartet on this CD; Bojan Zulfikarpasig on piano, Michel Benita on bass and Billy Hart on drums, combine perfectly to demonstrate the delicate balance which characterises the music of Simon Spang-Hanssen, "a balance between profane dance and sacred ritual."
